Eye Level F1 Lap

In this video we can see Luca Di Grassi testing new Pirelli rubber in Barcelona, using Pirelli’s own test car. A camera was placed within the visor of his helmet so that we may glimpse what only a lucky few have been able to.

Granted, Luca was taking it easy as one of his eyes was being covered by the camera making the lap a bit tricky. But, this video doesn’t shy away from giving me chills. Those gearshifts through his state-of-the-art sequential gearbox must feel like a sledgehammer each time he goes up and down. Amazing.

Oh, fun fact! That steering wheel is most likely worth more than your house. :-D

Stay classy, Gearheads.

Suzuki at Pikes Peak 2011

Thanks to GoPro, who also has one of the most awesome marketing campaigns ever, the entire in-car, record breaking hillclimb of the Suzuki SX4 is on Youtube for us to enjoy. It is driven by well experienced Monster Tajima. Total time up the hill? 9 minutes and 51 seconds.

Does anyone else think this driver has ‘monster’ balls of steel?

Michele Mouton

The 1980’s were a different time. People wore tiny shorts, drank beer encased in neon colored foam insulators, idolized hairy men in tights and racing was still extremely dangerous compared to today’s standards.  At this point, racing manufacturers were starting to achieve record breaking numbers in engine development. Formula One cars were beginning to slam 1000 horsepower onto the pavement, top fuel dragsters started peaking out their insane 7000hp+ engines and Group B rally cars were driving through cramped, narrow streets while trying to plant over 600hp onto the ground. Epic times, indeed.

One star to arise from this era was Michele Mouton.  A French rally car diver, she went on to become the most successful woman World Rally Championship history. Loved and respected by her peers, her fame would grow during her years in Group B rally. She is the first, and so far only, woman to ever win a WRC round in 1981.

She would then continue to race until retiring in 1986 after the increasingly fatal Group B class rally cars were banned. One laurel in her career which is highly noteworthy, she broke the Pike’s Peak hill climb record in 1985 using her Group B Audi Quattro. Not an easy feat to overcome.

It took a massive amount of skill and fearlessness to drive a Group B car, let alone race one on the edge. This is widely considered one of the most dangerous forms of motorsport, and she competed during its most dangerous era with grace.

Here she is recently driving a Porsche rally car while giving an interview- sideways.

Danica, eat your heart out.

EU to ban cars from cities

paris1The European Commission has issued a plan which essentially bans all cars from major cities by the year 2050.  In a new draconian sweeper resembling the utopian future straight from Gene Roddenberry’s works,  people will have to rely on mass public transit systems to get around in major cities.  They plan on using higher taxation of fuel, among other things, to force people out of their cars and use alternative means of transportation.

I honestly can not believe this complete and utter bullshit.  It seems that civil rights are starting to turn from actual majority  rights to appeasing the few.  Mark my words, while everyone is crying about political correctness, our human rights are going to be trampled upon with every new sweeping law.  I can’t wait to see what the California Air Resources Board will do next to follow suit.

I, for one, do not welcome our new utopian overlords.  Enjoy your mass-transitional future, European nations.
